History

Ak Lu’um Waldorf School was born in September 2006 in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Founded by Siobhan Bowers and Gabriela Nuñez the initiative began with five children in a house on the outskirts of Playa. The main objective to provide quality, holistic education to all the families who sought it, regardless of academic capacity, financial ability or cultural background. In 2008 Ak Lu’um inaugurated its jungle campus, an ecological, solar-powered sustainable school.

Today, in harmony with our environment, waste is separated and recycled and we make organic compost on an ongoing basis, we encourage community members to do the same. Our chickens take care of the organic leftovers from lunch and provide the school with free-range eggs. Ak Lu´um is working on recycling and members of the community can approach for advice on recycling of any materials, including those we accept at our collection point. We are fully generating our own power and water resources. Children work in the garden and on improving the school.

” Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings who are able, out of themselves, to impart purpose and direction to their lives”
